Plastering is a process by which rough, coarse, and uneven surfaces of walls and ceilings are smoothened for durability and aesthetic purposes using a particular material called plaster. Different types of plaster finishes with different appearances.
Here
are just some of the common plaster finishes you could choose from:
• Smooth Cast Plaster Finish is achieved using a blend of mortar, cement, and fine sand spread smoothly using a skimming or wood float.
• Rough Cast Plaster Finish also called Spatter Dash Finish is achieved using a blend of mortar, coarse aggregate, cement, and sand. Large quantity of mortar is taken by a trowel and it is dashed into the surface and levelled using a wooden float. Usually this type of plaster finish is preferred for external renderings.
• Sand Faced Plaster Finish is achieved using a thick layer of cement and mortar. The first coat is applied in zigzag lines. After 7 days of curing, a thick layer of second coat is applied then the surface is leveled using a sponge. Then sand is screened over the second coat using skimming or wooden float to obtain uniform grain size.
• Pebble Dash Plaster Finish is achieved using mortar, cement and sand. After plastering, pebbles are dashed onto the plastered surface and then slowly pressed unto the plastered surface using wooden float.
• Scrapped Plaster Finish is achieved by scraping the thick final coat with steel blade or plate scrap.
• Depeter Plaster Finish is similar to Pebble Dash Finish but pieces of gravel or flints are used instead of pebbles.
• Textured Plaster Finish is achieved from stucco plastering in which different textures or shapes are made on the final coat using suitable tools.
As described above, plastering seemed so simple. However, all of the above finishes require specific and accurate measures of plastering materials. Too much or less cement or mortar or sand or water won’t yield the desired result. Certain techniques in the use of skimming or wooden floats are learned best by experience.
